Like New York and London, each year Barcelona plays host to a marathon that attracts runners from all over the world. The next Barcelona Marathon will be held on the 6 March 2011, and is likely to
see thousands of people converge on the city to test their athletic abilities. In fact, it is estimated that out of the 8,000 people that attempt the Barcelona Marathon each year, almost half are foreigners.
The Barcelona Marathon, or the Marato Barcelona as it is also known, has been a national pastime since 1978 and as well as the usual 42.1km race, there are 5 and 10km races for those who are trying to build up their stamina.
Like marathons all around the world, the Barcelona Marathon takes in some of the sights and most famous buildings of the city. As you'd expect running through the streets of Barcelona, Antoni Gaudi's designs are showcased strongly with many of his buildings on the route, such as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera.
Other notable landmarks include Camp Nou, the base of world-famous football team FC Barcelona, the Hospital de Sant Pau and the Magic Fountain in Montjuic Park. In fact, the race starts and finishes in the Montjuic Park with the route going, not just through the city, but along the harbour-side. This may come as a bit of relief for many of the runners as the cool air off the sea is a welcome break when racing through the sunny city.
As Barcelona is such a beautiful city, the marathon is very popular throughout Europe, but whereas some marathons such as the one in New York are famously flat, Barcelona's does have a few steep inclines, mainly around the beginning of the race.
