Each time I am planning a tripaway I look into brochures of many of Europe’s cities, staring for hours at thedifferent attractions which each city has to offer as well as researching the weatherand climate, but more often than not there seems to be a gravitational pullsteering me towards the city of Barcelona. But what is it which attracts meback to this city so often?

When contemplating why I likeBarcelona so much, the first thing that springs to mind is the atmosphere whichalways welcomes me. Regardless of the time of year there is always a sense ofexcitement and the feeling that something is happening. This is largely due tothe fact that there are so many visitors to the city at all times, which issomething that can often detract from a city’s charm yet somehow always seemsto add to the experience here in Barcelona.

The second reasons why I loveBarcelona is the fact that there is so much fascinating architecture toexplore, not only in the shape of the city’s more famous structures such asSagrada Famila and the cathedral, but all over the city including the charmingside streets and even the more modern buildings.

With Barcelona being home to the best club side in the world it comes as no surprise that the city’s second team, RCD Espanyol, are often neglected by the media and by visitors to the city. Espanyol are amongst the largest clubs in the country and attract around 40,000 fans to their home games, and in most cities around the world this would qualify them to be the leading team in the area, especially as they regularly finish in the top half of Spain’s top league, La Primera Liga. Espanyol has a rich history since being formed in the year 1900, including the fact that they were the founding member of La Liga and the first club to win the Copa del Rey.

RCD Espanyol play their home games in the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, which is to the west of central Barcelona and has won a prestigious award. My Day out on Barcelona Beach

One of the best features of Barcelona which sets it apart from other major cities in Europe and around the world is the fact that the city has a beach which is only a few minutes walk from the city centre. When I visited Barcelona recently for a 3 day business trip and my boss told me that I would have the middle day to myself due to a cancellation, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take advantage of the good weather by spending the day on the beach.

On the day I visited the beach I got up reasonably early so that I could make the most of my day. Stepping off the Metro at Barceloneta, my mind was filled with what activities I would do once I was on the beach. I had read various reviews about the range of water sports, including windsurfing and kite surfing, how fabulous the water was to swim in and how relaxing it was to grab a beer from one of the many beach hut bars.

In the end I decided that, as the sun was yet to show its full force, I would start with a swim to clear my head. After a half an hour splash I dried off in the sun before partaking in a massage from a lady who was offering her services to the revellers. Whilst I was enjoying the massage I decided to leave the water sports for this time as I wanted to leave something for my next visit as I definitely want to return.

A walk along the sea front to one of dozens of seafood restaurants and a huge dishful of mussels followed by a glass of Spanish red wine. What a day. And peopel wonder why I choose to live here?!

My 3 Favourite Spanish Wines

Spain is renowned for its expansive vine yards and fine wines. Being a wine lover I love visiting Spain and sampling the different wines on offer. Each time I visit I make an effort to try something new. After much deliberation, I would have to say that, so far, the three wines below are my favourite:

Clos Erasmus 2004 from Clos Erasmus - If you like sweet wines then this is the choice for you. I absolutely adore this wine and it goes down especially well once the main course has been finished and you move on to either cheese or deserts. Alternatively it can enjoyed on its own, especially on a sunny Spanish day in a bar overlooking the beach.

Pingus 2004 from Bodegas Pingus - The smoky black fruits which are used to create this wine go superbly with game dishes. The elastic texture really gives the wine lover a disco in their mouth which is hard to replicate. For me there is something truly superb about the blend of fruits and I enjoy the wine regardless of the time of year.

Viña el Pisón 2004 - If I was pushed I would have to say that this is my favourite of all Spanish wines. The colour is dark purple-black. When I drink this wine it makes me feel like I am in a different world. I simply become lost in the flavours and enjoy the elegance with is acquired by an apparent power which leaves me yearning for more.

My Experience of the Nou Camp Stadium Tour

Being a huge football fan one of the first things that came to my mind when it was confirmed that I was visiting Barcelona was the football club. Barcelona FC is what I associate most with the city as Spanish football is so widely covered in this country. They are a marvellous club with so many world class players and over the years I have watched so many of their games and marvelled at the size of the stadium and the atmosphere within it.

One of the first things I researched when I found out that I was visiting Barcelona was the stadium tour. I simply would not be content with just walking around it or seeing it from a distance, I simply had to go inside. I have to say, after hyping up the visit so much in my own head, I was delighted that my experience did not disappoint. It was quite simply one of the best days of my life.

I can’t decide what it was that I enjoyed most about my tour as there was so much to enjoy. The walk around the changing room before heading out to the tunnel and surfacing onto the pitch surrounded by the immense stands gave me a genuine feel of what it must be like for the players who play here week after week. I am not surprised that the top players in the world want to be here.

Aside from walking around the stadium, the other highlight of the tour was the museum. It was amazing to experience firsthand the history of the club which I hold in such high regard.

Its a hit day here in Barcelona and the atmosphere has been great with the World Cup semi final between Spain and Germany only now hours away. In many of the piazza's and bars, it is been choc-a-bloc with people wanting to watch the games and to at the same time, share the experience.

If Spain do win tonight then expect a quite wild evening across Barcelona and wild celebrations. It would be Spain's first ever World Cup final if they succeed.

The omens are very good with the Paul the octopus predicting a victory for Spain. The octopus has correctly predicted the result of every German game so far!

My prediction: I am supporting Spain but the Germans look too strong.

I do get asked often if Barcelona is a safe city and the truth is that it is not more dangerous or not safer than any other major city. Perhaps to be fair it safer than many capital cities but crime does occur for small rather than major crimes and so a few very simple tips.

Wallets and Purses - you can buy a cheap pouch which you hang from your neck and thus is hidden behind your clothes or under your socks. If you do carry as wallet do not leave it visible in a back pocket. Las Ramblas is one of the key areas for pickpockets so Do visit this area BUT just be a little more careful.

Passport - It can always be worth having a photocopy of your passport saved on a web based email address. If you then for any reason, lose your passport, you will have access faster to more information for a replacement.

Wondering where to stay and where to go out in Barcelona is something that comes up time and time again from groups and individuals visiting us here in Barcelona. So, to take a look at some of the key areas within Barcelona and this time Montjuic.

Montjuic has changed dramatically in the last 20 years with investment from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics meaning a huge level of redevelopment. Montjuic is home to the Olympic Park and swimming Centre and this has rejuvenated the area.

The area of Montjuic as a whole overlooks Barcelona port and provides a great view of the city as a whole. Sat on a massive hill, Montjuic is a quieter area than many other parts of Barcelona and thus can be quite a good place to stay if quieter is what you want. You can get to the top via Metro and then the on the Funicular Montjuic. You can also jump on a bus and you'll be onto Las Ramblas within about 15 minutes. Overall this is a good and decent area in which to be based.

It has been peculiar in the last few days as its been snowing today here in Barcelona and on the beaches such as Sitges. I have lived here 20 years and I cannot remember ever seeing snow (except of course when I headed to Andorra) for skiing.

Life is certainly continuing here in Barcelona and any of you heading here will still have a great time and be looked after. From an events point of view we simply adapt the evens to incorporate the weather so in one way or another all events get to go ahead. Of course the indoor Barcelona events such as indoor karting, the pub tours and the life drawing classes are not affected by the outdoor weather.

Many people who do not live in Barcelona ask how things are in Barcelona given that the economy has been bad in recent months and over 2009. Is the city running as normal. Are all events running? What is it like in Barcelona?

To be very honest, many companies have seen a downturn in business BUT otherwise it has been business as normal. You still see everyone sat out in the cafes on sunny days, all events including for example the city treasure hunt are running and FC Barcelona are top of La Liga - so all is fine.

Barcelona F1 Grand Prix

It is set to be a simply amazing season in F1 with Alonso racing for Ferrari, with Michael Schumacher back in F1 and racing for Braun and teamed back up with Ross Braun. Add onto that, the two last World Champions (Button and Hamilton) both racing for the same team to create an all-English Dream Team and what a season ahead.

The 2010 Barcelona F1 Grand Prix takes place this year in May with practice sessions on the 7th May, qualifying on the 8th May and race day on the 9th May.

Cave Snorkelling in Spain

One of the newest events for 2010 for corporate, stag, hen and team building events in the Barcelona area is Cave Snorkelling. This event has of course been around for a while but has become a new event on the organised groups list with companies such as BarcelonaAdventure.com

If you are new to the concept of Cave Snorkelling, is pretty much as the title suggest in that you go snorkeling in caves. This gives snorkelling a more interesting feel, sometimes with the caves dark. The tours are normally organised though such that everything is quite safe and in caves in which you'd be extremely unlikely ever to get lost.

In Spain (including near Barcelona) a number of companies offer Cave snorkelling and can provide you with more information.

Quad Biking in Barcelona

I like to try all of the team building, corporate and stag and hen events myself (at least for the ones which are practical to try as I am not interested myself to do the pole dancing lessons). And this last weekend I at last got to try the Quad Biking.

I was a bit nervous to try this as I was not sure if you needed any special skills behind the wheel or just in general, I was not sure what to expect. It's a great activity though and once you have spent 5 minutes driving one of the quad bikes, it is really quite a buzz.

The bikes tend to be 250cc and the biking taking you through some interesting terrain outside of Barcelona, in the countryside. Our ride took just over 2 hours and there was a guide so it was well organised and nothing really to worry about.

This is especially good for stag weekends although to be honest most people would probably enjoy this. It's not suitable for kids though. You can learn more about Quad biking in Barcelona online.

Barcelona to Paris

I love Barcelona and have spent the last 5 Christmas Days in the last 5 years here but now for somewhere different for one year. The choice was somewhere warm such as the Caribbean, somewhere far away such as Thailand or somewhere great for winter sports and winter time. So..well. I decided on Paris.

It comes down to budget and with friends living in Paris it'll be different for one year at least - and it is quite cheap to fly to Paris from Barcelona. I fly tomorrow so I am hoping that the snow affected flights will not stop my flight tomorrow.

Anyway - very best of Christmas wherever you are spending Christmas and hope to see you in Barcelona in 2010.

I often get asked about what type of accommodation in Barcelona is the best for holidays including those for corporate groups and stag and hen groups in Barcelona.

If you are a group of over 3 people and planning to spend 3 or more days in Barcelona then your best bet is a short-term apartment. This means that per person it can often work out much cheaper than a hotel and also mean more space and also the chance to have self-catering facilities - meaning at least you have the choice if you also want to get food from the supermarket and have a fridge for example.

If for just 1 or 2 nights then a hotel is your best bet. Several of the holiday apartment agencies only allow bookings for a 3 nights minimum so hotel in this case can be best.

Using the Barcelona Metro system

Many of the major cities in Europe have a good local transportation system and Barcelona have a transportation system which is as good as any.

Taxis - are plentiful is quite easy to find as you walk around the city. The yellow and black cabs roam around the city in large numbers and except for peak times, you shouldn't have to wait too long.

Buses - The local bus service in Barcelona is relatively good. The only problem though is that unless you are local it is probably too much hassle to realistically spend time getting used to the bus service. The Barcelona metro is so easy, cheap and extensive and quick to learn that metro is the very best way for new visitors.

Metro - One thing I would advise you to do is to buy a 10 ticket pass. You can buy these from the ticket vendor machines which you find in most stations. It works out much cheaper if you buy a pass with 10 tickets on it. These can also be used on the bus system!

Barcelona Groups - If you are a group i.e. a large family, stag or hen party or corporate group, then one of the best options can be to stay in Barcelona vacation rental apartments. This new idea for group team building involves a photography to a theme, ti a tie restraint and with certain criteria for the task. The main theme can involve for example a:

or certain places and location.

The 'Team Photography Challenge' can be a fun way to get people working together as they run around a city trying to capture images against a predetermined list. If a list of specific items you might find yourself needing to find someone you can photography cooking in a Barcelona restaurant and then find yourself on the seafront needing to get a couple in their swimwear. The challenge is fun, requires creativity and is done to a time limit and with a prize. Some of the locations you might have to find are hidden away or require good map reading and everyone will need to play their part.

It can perhaps be overwhelming at first, trying to work out where to stay in Barcelona. Should you stay in Exiample, Barri Gotic or by Las Ramblas? A quick intro to the areas.

Most central: Las Ramblas - If you want to be right in the middle of everything and are not worried about crowds and noise as long as you can have great access to transport and attractions then Las Ramblas is a good choice.

Combination: Barri Gotic - Want to be near to the beach, close to Las Ramblasand also near to soem good restaurants and bars and just slightly off he absolute main toruist street, then Barri Gotic is good.

Off centre: Montjuic - If you want to stay slighly off the main tourists street and live with a view over the city of Barcelona that staying up on the hill on Montjuic is worth considering.

Last week I tried Cocktail making classes here in Barcelona and of all the events I have tried in the past, this is one of the most fun and interesting.

The classes started off with a pep talk and some basic information and some introductions etc and then we saw a classic display like something out of the Tom Cruise Cocktail movie. We then were put to work and started to learn the drink combinations and stated practicing flinging the containers and learned some tricks.

I am starting to get nervous now. FC Barcelona were 12 points clear a few weeks ago in La Liga and after losing at home to RCD Espanyol and another draw, we suddenly find ourselves only 7 points clear of Real Madrid.

Mid-week in the Champions Leagu went well and we are hoping for a double - La Liga and the Champions League title.

Now is a great time to visit us here in Barcelona as March and April are in my view one of the best months of the yeat to come here. The weather can often be very pleasant in these months and April certainly.

The rises temperatures and also this is a time before the bigger summer crowds flock to the city and this for me also adds to the benefits of these months. Getting into tourist attractions such as La Sagadra Familia and Gaudi's various museums is more crowded when may and June come around.

To be quite honest though, anytime of year can still be excellent because the city is used to holding major events and catering to large crowds. We'll look at the pending 2009 Barcelona F1 in the next blog and discuss ticket information and the venue.

Of all the team building events I have been involved with in Barcelona, the Treasure Hunt activity is always one of the most fun. Participants also tend to give very good feedback on this activity and in terms of team building, it does get the groups working together whilst having fun at the same time.

So what is the Treasure Hunt about exactly. What happens is that the teams (often 4-6 people in one team) are given a map and certain clues and the teams have to navigate their way around Barcelona and find certain things. The treasure hunts can be custom made ones and a prize offered for the winning team.

The beauty of this event is that it gets people working together and because it is fun and in Barcelona, even the quiter team members normally get involved. At the end of the event it is common for everyone to go for dinner or a drink together and have a laugh and joke about the event. This is not your usual read on Barcelona and if you are interested in the deeper cultural aspects of Barcelona you should enjoy this book.

If you are looking for a great guide to Barcelona and simply want to now where the best of everything is then the book I would recommend is Time Out Barcelona. The book covers everything from how to get around the city, good restaurants, bars, shops, attractions and much more and there are some decent pictures and maps also in the book. The nights are getting darker earlier and the temperatures cooler now, here in Barcelona, but the atmosphere is good and certainly a Xmas one. The Xmas Market in Sagrada Familia is worth visiting (and you can combine it with a visit to Sagrada Familia the church).

Barcelona is a great place to be at Christmas time although not for the weather. Forget warm and hot sunny days but do expect plenty of excellent shops, plenty of good winter food and drink and plenty of activities and events still going on.

As highlighted on the Barcelona Xmas blog there are some very good Xmas markets in the heart of Barcelona including the Santa Llúcia Market which takes place in Sagrada Familia. There are usually about 100 stalls and they sell all types of Xmas decorations, trees and accessories. You will also find a few food vendors selling crepes and other foods.

Barcelona has some very good superstores and also boutique style shops thus for Xmas shopping why go all the way to NYC for shopping?

One of the most fun things I have done in Barcelona since I arrived a few years ago is to do the Barcelona Helicopter Tour ride. Many years ago I did a silimar thing with a NYC Helicopter Tour Ride a few years back.

From the NYC experience I realised that it is one of the most dynamic and amazing ways of seeing a city thus I tried the same type of experience in Barcelona. In August it does get very hot and certainly Barcelona is 100% worth being it. Just a few tips though include:

If you can, carry a water bottle around in a small back-pack so that you can drink water throughout the day as you visit different sites. Keep hydrated.
Do ensure you using a strong sun screen factor because the sun is very powerful in Barcelona.
Try and book a room or apartment in Barcelona which has Air Conditioning. This really wil make your stay so much more comfortable.
If you are a group, book Barcelona group events in advance and consider organising airport transfers ahead of time.

Barcelona is ideal for playing golf in many ways, particularly because of the combination of great weather and great courses. One of the things in fact which I like most is that a lot of people are new to golf and in and around Barcelona (i.e. in Sitges) there are a number of what are known as pitch and putt courses. These are courses with holes which are 100-200 metres i.e. better for beginners, but still a lot of fun.

Budget flights to Barcelona

Sending your team over to Barcelona may cost a fair amount if you have a large group to send across. You may want to go with an airline such as British Airways (they have a sale on at the moment) or to Barcelona, if flying from the UK, you also have the option of using Easyjet or Ryanair.

Easyjet fly into the most central of Barcelona airports, flying into the at El Prat, a relatively short drive or train ride to the centre of Barcelona. Easyjet prices tend to flucuate and the prices are sometimes more expensive than the likes of Barcelona, although sometimes cheaper.

Flying with Ryanair means flying in effect to a different town, i.e. Girona. Girona is a 50 minute drive from Barcelona and coaches are laid on for flights into this airport, for people going to Barcelona. For a group of you going over, I would recommend trying to fly into Barcelona International airport at El Prat i.e. using Easyjet or British Airways.

People often ask me what the best time to go to Barcelona and about the Barcelona weather is without question I would recommend between April and early June, or September or October.

In July and August the heat can be stiffling and there is a reason why so many of the residents of Barcelona leave the city to head for the cooler mountains. This though does not stop thousands of mad dogs and Englishmen, and many other foreigners from still heading to Barcelona.

I have myself been on quite a few team building exercises in Barcelona and one of my favourites is the City Treasure Hunt. I have participated a few times as part of a company and I've also organised a few.

I guess the thing I like the most about this corporate team building event in Barcelona, is that you caneasily split people into small groups and add a bit of competitive spirit into the event and give a fun prize at the end. From our experience of the team building events we organise in Barcelona, we have come up with a few tips for team building within your own company.

Sense of purpose - Give the team a sense of purpose and something interesting, fun and rewarding to achieve.
Achievable goals - The targets though should always be realistic, even if they are tough goals to achieve. If the goals can never be achieved, the staff will simply always become de-motivated and the team building will not be moving in the right direction.
Incentives - If you are able to, try and introduce incentives for meeting goals and targets. Try and give a monthly prize or two or a group night out or dinner if costs permit.
Atmopshere - Do everything you can to make the atmosphere in your team strong. Include the odd social meeting or take Friday lunctimes in the local bar together.
Rules - Every team needs some structure and some goals for team building, to work effectively.
